Building Workforce Opportunities for Southwest Alaska

The Southwest Alaska Vocational & Educational Center (SAVEC) is a unique regional nonprofit training center dedicated to providing rapid-response workforce development and education opportunities for residents of Southwest Alaska. SAVEC’s training focus is driven by community, industry, and agency workforce needs.

Through partnerships with educational institutions, tribal organizations, regional employers, and service providers, SAVEC offers students the opportunity to receive hands-on occupational training designed to build technical job skills and support immediate employment opportunities. Where applicable, SAVEC training courses may be accredited through the University of Alaska Fairbanks Bristol Bay Campus for college credit.

Southwest Alaska spans more than 55,000 square miles — an area roughly the size of the state of Ohio — and includes 31 rural communities with limited road access. Transportation throughout the region is primarily by air or barge, and many SAVEC students travel from remote villages to attend trainings.

To address these unique regional challenges, SAVEC specializes in short-term, intensive workforce training programs designed to quickly prepare residents for employment in high-demand industries including construction, transportation, maritime support, healthcare, safety training, information technology, and infrastructure support services.
